Why Did He Make The Man? Poem by Don Dickenson

Why Did He Make The Man?

On a shady branch, high in the tree,
sat 'Monkey' in a somnolent repose
not quite asleep just resting his eyes,
relaxed from his head to his toes,
He heard the sound of Elephant
taking his daily walk
so waking up he swung down low,
to share in a little talk

Said the monkey to the Elephant,
'I don’t understand,
Why God, who made the world so good
To such a wondrous plan,
Then had to crown his handiwork
by making, the first man'.

No, said the elephant, with a flick of his ear,
The world is so wonderful, in all creation
'tis what I most fear,
That God who made US, made a mistake,
when ‘HE’ made, The man.

Monkey thought for a while,
paused, then thought a bit longer,
He started to speak,
but with problems like this,
he needed more time just to ponder,
so he shook his head, and quietly said,
‘HE’ made, The man.

Cer- umph - at last, Monkey coughed,
clearing his throat,
'It’s not as if we are speaking, of making a coat,
He’s a being, created, almost like us,
and though it is hard to believe,
He who made us, each to his clan
at the end of creation
‘HE’ made, The man'

Elephant lifted his trunk, high, in the air,
murmuring quietly, 'Do you think that it is....
That HE..... does not care'?
'Oh! No' cried the monkey, in deepest distress,
'don’t say such a terrible thing',
Then spoke his companion,
'Tell me this. (that’s if you can)
why did he spoil it by making......, The man'?

'They burn and they pillage, despoiling the earth
They’re selfish and smelly,
and when you consider, have little mirth',
'And habits! They’re noisy, drive motor cars
neglect little children, drink beer from a can,
Oh why, Oh why, did He make, the Man'.

The monkey, he chuckled, a small quiet laugh
as he looked at his friend standing there on the path..
'It would have been be good if for once, only once
He had forgotten the wonderful plan,
and missed out the bit,
where He, made the man',

'I wonder why, for the risk was so great,
He made man, and He gave man a mate,
when He built the first garden,
with trees full of fruit, that’s how it began,
and who was in charge? you’ve guessed it....
that fellow', 'the man'.

Who was it said'I’ll know it all
whose pride and stupidity caused the first fall,
when seeking knowledge superior to win,
lost out to Satan, and let in the sin'
'It’s just like a race where only one ran,
You’ve got to believe it... yes, ‘twas...The man'.

Elephant snorted a very long snort
he wasn’t vindictive, no, he wasn’t that sort,
Just puzzled, 'why was it' he queried
'when He sent his son
Knowing that, though he was king, he had only one,
Do you think that it was part of the wonderful plan,
his son should live on the earth as a man'?

'Well now', said monkey, pausing for thought,
'Man never learned the lessons, He taught
for although they knew that His son was good,
took him and nailed him to a cross made of wood'.
Elephant, lifting his head, the forest to scan,
said, 'It does make you wonder, - why, -
HE made the man'.

Just then, through the jungle,
so green, and so wild
came a large mother monkey,
and her small monkey child,
With a tear in his eye,
Monkey bent low on the bough
“Elephant, Ive something to tell you just now,
It’s good to know you,
and count you my friend,
But I wouldn’t give him up
for you, whatever the end”.
“I understand” his companion declared,
“on this we will surely agree
I’d never expect you to give up your son,
to save such a creature as me
But ‘HE’ gave His son from heaven above,
for all of creation, to show man his love,
Maybe, if we had a grasp of eternity’s span,
we then would know, why ‘HE’ made the man”.
