Why Shall I Grieve For A Passed Year? Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Why Shall I Grieve For A Passed Year?

why shall I grieve for a passed year
rather than joy relative in the new?
About the new year there linger
fear as much as joy, and joy as fear,
too
there lingers beauty and less beautiful
in the new year
as after all old years passed
in the utter whirlwinds of wild Time.
Has Time been kind in its ruthlessness?
Which more?
The days?
The nights?
The autumn?
Winter?
Summers?
Spring?
Or else as the wave-currents flow
Neutral relative to these
And numb to joys and sorrows
Pain and pleasure,
where
Sufferings breed of new civilization seeds
And from there Civilization to new Civilization.
