Why You'Ve Forsaken Me Poem by Robert Rorabeck

Why You'Ve Forsaken Me

Everything is lighting up in the very
Plausible world of butterfly midgets:
Everything can be seen even where
There’s shadows,
And I’m pressing my palms to my eyes in a
Heartbeat mask;
And I’ve known where you are for so long,
Sitting at that strange desk the roof pretending to
Separate you from the stars;
And it is my unquenchable horror to be in the same
Room with you and for you to be in
Love with another man; but look at all these walls
The four winds of our room.
Midnight is laughing bloody murder and all the churches
Are just as naked as an orchard,
Because the sea is in love with the stars;
And isn’t that who you are, why you’ve forsaken me.

Only you can describe the unquenchable horror of unrequited love with such force, Rob.
