Will Of The Next Victim Poem by Macie Lewis

Will Of The Next Victim

If the heat of a bullet
Ends my life,
Do something for me.

Protect the others
I leave in my wake.
Don't you dare let them suffer my fate.

Most people who die of violence
Get a nice funeral.
Don't give me one of those.
Give me a protest.

Give me signs demanding attention
Demanding change.
Not later-now!
Before I am no longer the most recent death.

Take my ashes and sprinkle them
On the steps of Congress,
So they can stamp on me in death
Just like they stamped out my life.

After all, if I am killed by gun,
Couldn't I have been saved
By reasonable legislation?

But if it is too late for me,
Save the other future victims.
For my will does not include a funeral.
I want a protest. I want change.
