Will You Come To Bar Nunziata? Poem by Denys E. W. Jones

Will You Come To Bar Nunziata?

Will you come to Bar Nunziata, will you come?
Cross my heart and hope to die, you will have fun.
One or two slag off the food, but in fact it's jolly good,
You should try the Bar Nunziata at least once!

There's a great variety of grub to choose,
Trofie al pesto for example ain't bad news.
And supposing at first sight, your taste buds do not ignite,
You can turn your 'ttention to a spot of booze!

And of course, the fare is strictly Genoese -
You're in Zena, you don't want to eat Chinese!
Nor no Sushi, Sauerkraut, (ask for them, they'll chuck you out,
No, I doubt if that would be a clever wheeze...)

Va sans dire, that there's still loads of other nosh -
Mezzalune, piadine and brioches.
Though I know of certain bars, where the tourists are aghast,
At Nunziata they won't try to rip you off!

Now perhaps I oughta tell you 'bout the Staff:
Nice 'n' friendly, always game for a good laugh.
Out of bed 'round five o'clock, almost night when they knock off,
To be blunt, the three just work their arses off!

Right, get down to Bar Nunziata, why the wait?
Disappointment looms for those who hesitate.
Lots of folk frequent it now, 'cos the word has got around,
If you're hungry, best thing's not to turn up late!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I am a regular visitor to the Bar Nunziata, Genoa, Italy, since it is near my workplace, the Language Department, Genoa University. Zena is the shortened, dialectal form of Genova, like Birmingham, England is soemtimes contracted to Brum. If you are ever in Genoa, pay the Nunziata a visit, Giorgio, Maurizio and Katia will give you a warm welcome.
