Winding Roads Poem by Marsha Cleveland

Winding Roads

Rating: 4.0

I found the paths leading down to the waters edge just like the brochure described.
The rushing sound was penetrating as it ran over rocks leading downward into the stream.

I stepped into the stream barefooted feeling the tickling between my toes.
Cool icy waters caressing my inner thighs I sighed breathlessly.

The paths of the waters cut winding roads all through the mountains gorge.
I explored them all looking for the perfect “secret place” to call my own.

One particular path was protected with purple irises and yellow lilies keeping
A lookout for all who wandered into the view.

Another path led into a snake like pattern with large boulders and broken rocks,
Smothering the entrance of crushing ripples as the waters moved fiercely forward.

Finally, I found it! The most beautiful site to behold!
I stood in awe as my eyes
Scanned over all the beauty and wonder there.

I could scarcely take it in!
A landscaped canvas!

Golden pebbles covered the streams floor glistening with the beams of sunlight.
Two large boulders side by side faced the opening while waters ran between them,
Splashing diamonds across the surface.

A “Garden Of Eden” encased the mouth of the winding road.
Magnificently displayed like the brush of the “Leonardo da Vinci”
“Madonna of the rocks! ”

Engraved into the belly of the waters ravine appeared two lovers sculptured by
Ravenous cutting of rampart hands.

The perfect “secret place” indeed!

I will forever journey these winding roads.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Being curious about traveling dirt roads, winding roads, and wooded paths we search for our special place to meditate, to feel free, and maybe share with someone along the way. I traveled many winding roads in life and always the journey finds something interesting. A rock, a flower, an old cabin in the woods, some strange animal, berries, a creek, so many things go unnoticed if you don't stop to search them out down those winding roads.

I wrote this in 2005 after a visit to a family reunion that brought back many child hood memories in the country.

I had my special place too.

Maybe you will find yours on those winding roads.

Absolutely stunning! What a vivid description of the beauty you looked for and the beauty you found. Loved your note about the poem too. Brilliant work.
