Oh! Winter, you are most welcome
With plenty of resources and charm
Among cereals wheat, paddy are main
Grains, corns, flower, fruits and sugar cane
Variety of veggies, roots, seeds, you grow
All stress and woes, you remove and throw
The sky is clear, weather is bright and fine
Very enjoyable your golden yellow sunshine
Boys and girls play and run in open fields
Peasants are busy with their annual yields
House wives are busy to make pulses' pills
To use in and make tasty curry in their meals
Varity of home-made sweets, pithe-puly
Patti-sapta, milk-rice, dosa-idly, saruchukly*
Special dishes in this occasion are made
Friends and relatives are invited and fed
These festival s are celebrated in different names
Makar Sankranty, Pongal, Lohri, Bihu all are same
Across India in different places village fairs held
Magic show, bio-scope, zoo, cinema assembled
Rarely available handicrafts are arranged to sell
Rural folks from far and wide come and enjoy well
Children play flute, eat sweets, enjoy the wheel
On way back eat free ‘bhog'** most satisfied, feel
*All are different kinds of cakes made of rice-paste/powder
Milk and special type of molasses called Nalen Gur, very
Tasty, which is prepared from extracted juice from date-palm
tree and after heating made to Nalen Gur, very popular, tasty
and almost compulsory in this occasion.
**bhog: Food items after worship and serving a portion of the same
to God or Goddess, then rest of it is distributed and fed to people with
their hearts' content.
