With My Eyes Open Poem by athena bell

With My Eyes Open

If my eyes were open
I would see friendly faces
faces of friends
If my eyes were open
I would see mesmerizing scenery
images of rolling seas, majestic
mountains, and deep valleys
If my eyes were open
I would see the love everywhere
children playing jump rope
couples walking in the park
stolen smooches in the car
birds singing, bees kissing
flowers, clouds hugging the sun,
not wanting to let go
If my eyes were open
I would see happiness, wherever
I would look
If my eyes were open....
But they're not.

Clouded by worry
Clouded by fear
I close my eyes
to hide from this darkness
but
by doing so
I am engulfed
engulfed in the black
blind
walking with eyes closed, tripping,
scaring those who love me
those who don't understand,
don't understand
that if i even try to
open these eyes of mine
even try,
I will realize that I
have to face these
problems,
If they were open,
my cowardice would be revealed

With my eyes open,
I would have to face my fears.

So
they will stay
forever closed
