Witness Of Love Poem by Gautam Sen

Witness Of Love

A huge tree is now on the wane,
Green leaves no more adorn its branches;
Roots in mesh underneath the plane
Still stream life before it blanches.
An old man visits everyday
As sun mops the darkness of night,
Venerable looks of his gray
Go well with the tree's vintage sight.

Both of them are in talking terms -
They talk about their golden youth,
One reminds, the other affirms.
Age has burdened them with dire truth.
He had left sweet memories here,
Those are all his prized possession;
His life with love grew full of cheers
Beneath this tree's kind impression.

This widower believes in myth
That a soul never leaves off the air,
It hovers o'er to cherish with
An ongoing, sweet love affair.
So he comes near the wisdom tree
To feel her whispered loving call,
Finds love alive as it could be.
Where her lost love lies quiet in pall.

This forlorn and abandoned tree
Guards oldie's love lain underneath,
Welcomes his friend with no life's glee
As the old man shows love with wreath.
On the tomb-stone he drops his tear
To touch her sweet desiring soul,
He bestows heart to premier dear -
Witnessed by the tree a love extolled.
