Word? Or Acts? Poem by Lakshmi Venkataraman

Word? Or Acts?

You speak as if I matter,
Yet your actions make it clear,
Just when I was about to believe
That Santa was real just
Like your whispers
Your actions made it clear that
You spoke as if I mattered

You speak as if I matter,
Yet your actions make it clear,
And when I realised that,
I started to care less.
A truce sealed between
Mind, heart and mouth ‘cause,
Your actions made it clear that
You just spoke as if I mattered

You speak as if I matter,
Yet your actions make it clear,
But you want me there,
When none were near.
I filled only the moments
And I know that because
Your actions made it clear that
You just spoke as if I mattered

You speak as if I matter,
Yet your actions make it clear –
Those moments that I’m ignored
For that firefly that glowed
And meddled you sore, yet
Your actions made it clear that
You just spoke as if I mattered

I fade and hope you never treat anyone this way
I fade till I become anything but a memory
You fade not for me ’cause you are my best teacher
