Words Poem by Valerie Dohren

Words

Words

The words have gone, there's nothing left
Which leaves my heart and soul bereft
No voice to set upon the page
The actor quits an empty stage.

The cold, cold days of wintertime
Have stolen all the verse and rhyme
There's now a void, an empty space
Just filled with lavender and lace.

Where are those days of tender youth
Now lost to time and lost to truth
Oh, were they just a dream, a lie
When all that's left, to die, to die.

With yellowed leaves upon the bough
The days are long and weary now
There's frost set on the roof-top high
The only sound, a sigh, a sigh.

Pray bring to me a garland fair
To fix upon my snow-white hair
And set me in a meadow sweet
To full surround my trembling feet.

For I am old, traversing fast
Towards that place where peace is cast
And where, perchance, to dream, to dream
Of where the sun and stars shall gleam.

To gleam and shine with heav'nly glow
That all my heart and soul should know
Of such a land with sweeter days
On which my ag'ed eyes may gaze.

Should e'er this poet's voice return
Then on the page once more would burn
The words that I may deem to write
Arrested from that cold, dark night.

I pray such words should full convey
How touched this soul when borne away
When borne away to that fair land
Where all my erstwhile life be spanned.

And now I weep, yes now I weep
To hold those words within my keep
Not ever then to let them die
Nor linger in a clouded sky.
