Yesterdays Gone Poem by Hugh Winter

Yesterdays Gone

Is Valentine's a special day? Of loving love and passion

When roses, golden gifts and diamonds are the fashion.

Of carded words and picture scripts so tenderly portrayed

When seductive, cheeky, vulgar too, comments are displayed.

Then after - cards are put away, to musty drawers confined

And only shown the light of day when sorrow's on the mind,

Then flowers wither, gold turns green and diamonds begin to crack,

This once a year display of love, on this I'll turn my back.

My love for you is not confined to a single annual day

For I do love you more so now than I loved you yesterday

And I will love you more and more as days and days pass by

And I will cherish and honour you, on this you can rely.

Not for us the love that fails and crumbles into dust.

Not for us that caring dwindles corroding into rust.

Ours, - ours is the future - loving together as one.

Ours, - ours is the new day - and yesterdays gone.
