You Poem by John Howard Davies

You

YOU
I can tell you that I'm sorry
but I'd be lying through my teeth
I'd try different combinations
for a little light relief

I could say that I still love you
I could say so many things
like you prick on my existence
as you load up with more stings

I don't suppose you're worried
what I have to say or not
now I've crumbled our persistence
as the core of us lays shot

It wasn't real or meaningful
It wasn't worth a lot
that dream that we existed in
that now just waits to rot

Can't buy more time or reasons
why I made the choice I did
I ran from your nice castle
in which I'd easily slid

You gave me what I asked for
I gave it back but then
my head so full of other things
that drove me around the bend

I miss you and I miss you
I miss you even more
more than I can understand
now I miss you even more

I'm not asking for forgiveness
nothing from you nothing more
I'm not asking you to like me
as we lick these wounds so sore

what I'd like to ask is this now
will you one day smile for me
not about the way we were
but the smile you let me see

I am smitten by your presence
by the fact of who you are
such a breath of air so pleasant
you are one of my stars.
