You And Me Poem by Mark E Webster

You And Me

Rating: 4.5

How much do you bend and wane,
Change from you to you or
Stay the same?
The same mass of molecules, no.
The same beliefs and feelings, no.
The same body, no.
And there is no soul.
Only imagination.
So, to grow, we change.
We move some way.
Yet something persists.
Something resists reinvention.
How much do you yield and give
Flow from you to you or
Always this?
The same tics and turns, no.
The same manners and mores, no.
The same mind, no.
And there is no aura,
Only memory.
So, we hold onto the past,
Yet something changes,
Something rearranges ourselves.
How much am I here and now,
Present to myself,
Or held in time?
The same neurons sparking, no.
The same sinews stretching, no.
The same heart, no.
And there is no essence,
Only yearning.
So we envision our future,
Yet something slows.
Something holds us back.
How much am I still me
When change around is all I see?
The mould is set, no.
The dye is cast, no.
There is no self,
Only...
