Young Mothers (Teenagers) Poem by Jacson Gelato

Young Mothers (Teenagers)

O' those young mothers
so alone they walk
as in those prams they push
their little babies
who are fast asleep
or wide awake;
O' those young mothers
so tired they look,
their minds, their thoughts
in turmoil
as of a careless friendship
they recall;
mistakes in gentleness of age
what a price to pay
as babies they hold
and feed and put to sleep
while young fathers forget
their promises to return home
and to adhere to paternity rules;
yet when they meet
sometimes they kiss
sometimes they quarrel
but with love they look
at their child who is either
fast asleep or gazing,
his little eyes
unable to visualize
how tomorrows will pass
without the love of a father;
amidst those tremors
of his parents dis-unity
slowly he will grow and walk
his first steps of life;
while his young father
with repentance
will store the guilt
for making his girlfriend
a young mother
when she was not ready for it;
and though his conscience
will refuse to discard the truth
unprepared is he
to play the role of fatherhood;
and though fatigued
is that young mother
proud she feels
to hold her child and kiss
as his innocent face
makes her overlook
the error she committed
of being a young mother
when she was not ready for it.
