'Zoey' Poem by Pushpinder Kaur

'Zoey'

‘Zoey'

‘Zoya' originating from Greek ‘Zoe'
means 'life';
Which, in Russian and Ukrainian
Means' Alive; '
In Urdu- 'Joyous, loving, caring';
Persian- 'Mohabbat'- 'love'.

‘Zoya', ‘Zoey'- the dedicated Pug-
which on June 6,2017
gave way to heat stroke,
Has left many hearts broke.

The connection with me,
Although, very brief
has left me stricken with grief.

More so, as the day I got a share
of her glimpse, happened to be her last!
So that in the mind's eye,
A subtle guilt makes itself aware!

Why? Why? Why?
An ardent dog-lover-
A Passionate animal fan,
Why did my view have to be the end?

Or is life a river of coincidences,
Strange and indecipherable?

Death, is reputed to
look for excuses and ways and means-
As dead-bent as remorseless as it is…

It must happen as it must-
And when…

However, the serene and composed
image of ‘Zoya', ‘Zoey'- squatting
In devotion to the ‘Havan'
shall be one of those everlasting imprints

that urge the mind to find peace
in the grappling thought
That every life is only a stage
In the longer journey

Wherein the Soul finds and figures
The avenues of its evolution-

So that ‘Death' is not the end
But the beginning…

Such is the mind's bidding.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
One of the strange and unforgettable coincidents of life- the day 'Zoey' passed away was my first and last glimpse of her! Her gracious Owner- a highly Respected Uncle ji- happened to be staying with us at the time- unaware of the loss! So, the special connect and the dedication! I feel she sat there witnessing the 'Havan' as perhaps God was paving the way for the 'Onward' and 'Higher' stage in her soul's journey.

God bless 'Zoey'! Always a Dog Lover, little did I know that my first poem on dogs would be about the demise of a beautiful pet...but strange are the strings of the heart- they seem to be strummed more by grief than by joy!
