Rafael Yaw Kumi Poems

Inside the corridors of my mind
I feel the tight embrace of a friend
An upsetting presence – a haven of solace; an embrace that captures my soul
When poetry becomes the habitation of lies
...

When I was a little boy, mother said that Odomankoma made a rainbow
A band of beauty that gladdened Noah and his kin
She brought smiles with her and a promise of peace to show
Her treasures, a dove and an olive shoot to grace her chin
...

In a city far away;
On the hilly slopes that dwarf a city’s charm;
On the dry banks of a silent lake;
In the turbid torrents of a mighty river’s wake;
...

It’s the end of a fiery passion
The birth of dying embers
Our hearts know this can mean only one thing
The goodbye of dear friends
...

When e’er do they take to flight?
I marvel at their majestic glide so light
How hither they come yet yonder reach the greatest heights
A feather in a million; a word in a lifetime of poetry
...

Prelude
It may sound like an elegy yet it rings like the love song of parakeets
When the heart of a man becomes the abyss of confused maladies,
It speaks as though bidding despedida even though it barely said bienvenida
...

My soul wanes
My spirit lives in these grains
Day and night my brows cry
That the greedy master will feast until he breathes his last sigh
...

I was made to love
I was made for love
I was made with love
I was made love
...

Adieu, my fair summer's friend
How hither your departure brings summer's end
You happily kissed away Spring's deceit
Yet so soon you conspire Autumn's conceit
...

With his backpack strapped fast
And the guts to journey against the wind's gust
Love the wanderer sets out in search of his soulmate
When season is due and reason steers him to his fate
...

Hither dawns dusk and in my heart a song asks to be sung
How I curl up and shudder at her lyrics so terrible!
A song fills the emptiness in my heart and leaves wandering in my thoughts an unanswered riddle
A forceful ballad forces my eyes open and compels my soul to sing
...

There is no better place to sing this song
There are no sweeter words than these
A pitch so tempting can only be sung in the highest heavens
A romance this alluring can only be felt at the teasing touch of my melody
...

A spell of Monsoon and a whisper of chill are her entire orchestra
A trickle of rain and a mild gust are more than enough reason to begin a ballad
She composes a rhythm of desire which wells up from deep within
Her voice rings through the barricade and calls out to me
...

My mind searches ceaselessly for my elusive guest;
My soul craves for an encore of her very best
Her proud presence may only be conjured by a melting pot of fantasy, fever, fondest feelings and frightful desire
She will bless me with her song which no ear has heard and no heart perceived
...

When sweet sleep robs me of my conscience
When love beckons out loud and deigns to allay my fears
When pain is but a distant memory
And pleasure the moment’s pleasure

The Silent Poem

Inside the corridors of my mind
I feel the tight embrace of a friend
An upsetting presence – a haven of solace; an embrace that captures my soul
When poetry becomes the habitation of lies
And rhymes the elusion of rhythm,
The brook in my heart dries up and the juice in my brain abandons her parched and thirsty for finesse

A robin is hatched to sing and a bell is made to ring
I was born for the glory of words and the valour of fables
I awaken out of ink and parchment tales unheard of and adventures so luring
Now I abandon contentment and leave forlorn the thrills of penmanship
My comfort lies in the still stillness of a blank sheet and a dry felt tip.

Behold the dawn of silent poetry
The loud oratory of the grave
The great silence in a poet’s heart
Now I lay my pen down to think, hoping one day I will write again the silent poetry of silence – the masterpiece of the silent poet
