Samuel Hayward Poems

As i awoke, and cleaned my gun,
The smell of rations hit me, the stale rum.
I stretched my legs and prepared for the day,
Where my country will fight, for right of way.
...

I see him,
He see's me
We just see each other, Plain as can be,
I know he's a ghost
...

Ive cried my sorrowfull tears
Over these few painfull years
When hope seems to abandon me
I just cannot see

For Country, For Queen

As i awoke, and cleaned my gun,
The smell of rations hit me, the stale rum.
I stretched my legs and prepared for the day,
Where my country will fight, for right of way.
The barbed wire beckoned to us, straight ahead,
A BANG a CRACK so i covered my head.
Mud, mud and blood all over my face,
Dead bodies were scattered all over the place.
I trudged ahead through the corpse-ridden field,
Hearing screams of my men, my men getting killed.
But i kept trudging, till i dropped into the trench,
My face screwed up from the sheer power of the stench.
Arm's were hanging, from mud at the sides,
Fake funerals, all men must abide.
This is the day in 1914,
Where hundreds will die, for Country, for Queen.
There was a shout, no, a scream,
Where did it come from? , i realised it was me.
My friend fell to the floor and then he cried,
Picked me up and buried me at the side.
I will remain there, for the rest of the war,
My family... My rank...My life is no more.
So this is my day, in 1914,
I have died for my Country, died for my Queen.
