Children Without Hope

I see them everyday
in the street, backyard, shops, houses
shining shoes
filling air in the cycle tubes
cleaning cars, cups, and vessels
just anything,
to make a little money
earn a meal.
Oh! these children without hope.

My horror gives way
to shame
then guilt
and then pity...
soon I become immune,
isn’t man born selfish?

Oh! when will my heart roar,
in compassionate rage
and wrench me from apathy?

The Coal Miner

He spends his life crawling
on his hands and knees
in the entrails of a dark tunnel
wading through mud and water
burrowing himself deep
in unfathomable darkness, daily
to get killed, maimed
or struck with black lung disease
or buried alive in the sinking debris.
