Simon Ojewale Poems

As I walked across the street
I met a man with crooked feet
To everyone he would stretch his hand
Hoping he gets some money
...

With a burdened heart I speak
A great taboo has occurred
For this wickedness has reached its peak
One I pray must be cured
...

Great Nation, where is your pride,
For I see you have gone to hide?
Your woes are no longer hidden
They've left you shriveled and bedridden.
...

Gone are the days
When children would converge at moonlight and listen to the old man's stories
Marveling in rapt attention to every word
Of his tales of worthy dames and vibrant men who brought home countless glories!
...

Worries creep daily in my head,
And my soul is wary of what lies ahead…

It seems you've really filled your pockets
Large enough to buy jets and rockets.
...

Finally we've made it here
As we march into a new year
Without a single scratch or tear

A toast to good things coming our way

The Beggar

As I walked across the street
I met a man with crooked feet
To everyone he would stretch his hand
Hoping he gets some money
His pain I could not withstand
And I knew this was not funny
So I put myself in his shoes
And wondered if that was me
I thought of the beautiful things I would lose
And what kind of person I would be
He's got no family and no job
As he walks down the street, he silently sobs
He wished he could put food on his table
And do common things that are simple
He has dreams of his feet being able
To walk on the streets with normal people
He regrets every single moment he begs
Moving from people to people with disabled legs
But he knows there's still hope
So he tries his best to cope
Whenever he tries to smile
It fades away after a little while
For luck has hardly smiled on him
So he wallows in self-pity
He hopes his pockets fill to the brim
As he wanders round the big city
