Melanholicna harmonika
Kopalna sezija.
Modri bliski.
Cevlji št. 40.

The sun is autumn calm
as though in mourning;
...

A suicide in front of a mirror.
A frightened soul.
The wind moans in the black woods.
The night's tempest tears my heart from my chest.
...

Skozi moje srce stopa veliki slon.
Cirkus Kludsky, vstopnina 5 din.
Ne obesi bolesti na veliki zvon!
...

Mesecina je mrzla kakor sladoled.
Prazna kakor trubadurske pesmi.
Lepo je sedeti v senci noci.
Latrine, Pissoir. Tukaj.
...

The moonlight is ice-cream cold.
Empty as the songs of troubadours.
It is pleasant to sit in the shadow of the night.
Latrine, Pissoir. Here.

Our eyes were flooded
with burning lava.
And the grey dust
...

Hey, hey: it's raining on the houses of Ljubljana,
and they curtain themselves in grey against the sun.
...

I love you, the grey face in the grey
window of the coffee house - the face
with expectations.-
In the age of broken spears, ships,

Our windows are barred.
White barricades.
The American Indians know nothing
of gravity.

A melancholy accordion.
Swimming season.
Blue lightnings.
Shoes size 40.

Martyrdom of thoughts.
A blue sea.
A grey jail.
A soldier spiking desperate thoughts

Above a madhouse is strolling
a moonstruck moon.
A Shadow-man is walking around a white garden
absorbed in his sad chin.

Ej, hej: dežuje na sive ljubljanske hiše,
Da se zagrinjajo v sivo zaveso pred soncem.
V Trstu nam požigajo Edinost.

A barrel of herrings
came to Ljubljana.
They were questioned

tomb.
Gold dollars in human hearts.
Our eyes ache from ash.

Srecko Kosovel Biography

Srečko Kosovel (18 March 1904 – 26 May 1926) was a Slovene expressionist poet who evolved towards avant-garde forms. Since the 1960s, Kosovel has become a poetic icon, in the league of the most prestigious Slovene literates like France Prešeren and Ivan Cankar. Together with Edvard Kocbek, he is considered as the most important Slovene poet of the post-WWI period. He produced an impressive body of work of more than 1000 poems with a quality regarded as unusually high for his age. Most of his works were published almost four decades after his early death. The poetry of Kosovel is seen to come from three artistic movements: Impressionism, Expressionism and Constructivism. Kosovel's poetry also incorporates elements with Dadaism, Surrealism and Futurism. His style is too complex to be identified by a particular movement or current. His works show his concern with social and political oppression in the Slovenen Lands, the fate of Slovenes threatened by foreign powers, the feeling of a decadence of Europe and the hope for a "new dawn". The Kras region, with its ascetic and rigid scenery, is one of the main motifs in Kosovel's poetry. His verses are full of wit, irony, depth and a sentiment of tragedy. He has been often compared to other brilliant and tragic European authors from his same generation, such as the Hungarian Attila József, Italian Cesare Pavese, Spanish Federico Garcia Lorca and Catalan Màrius Torres.)
