A Life To Remember

I remember the old days
When hunger cleaved clean
The entrails within,
Summer could pass without counting
Raindrops but tears on my unscathed face
Though unwilling, I became a man inside.

I learnt how to plough, yoke oxen at seven
A boy became a truculent man, grumpy and uneven.
Throughout the cruel days of cries and whispers
I don't remember dropping a molecule of whimpers
I was taught to be deaf and dumb to pain
Now defiant, sympathy is just a word in vain.

Harsh were the days I journeyed
Neither a sleep nor mirth have I enjoyed. ...

The Rod Of Iron

Blessed be them and those
Whose buttocks are of iron
When the king unleashes the rod of iron
To spank deviants and servants
Revolting against his behest or hunger
No blood shall spill
No soul will wail
No flesh will swell.
