Thembakazi Luvuno Poems

Earth to earth and dust to dust; I refuse to return as a story half told.
Release me into being, exhale me into life, release me to the I am.
This is my story as it begun, to the now and I refuse that this be the end.
The sole of my feet has scratched the earth’s surface in quest to live.

Ixesha Lam

Earth to earth and dust to dust; I refuse to return as a story half told.
Release me into being, exhale me into life, release me to the I am.
This is my story as it begun, to the now and I refuse that this be the end.
The sole of my feet has scratched the earth’s surface in quest to live.
My heart has bled and been glad, bitter-sweet at times; this is the life I have lived.
These palms have written and told, even re-lived the chapters of my up-bringing and these eyes live to tell the tale.

At this, every tear that met the earth was a volume of many inexpressible groans from the depths of my soul, ndinxaniwe.
Ndinxanelwe ixesha lam, ndingxanyelwe sisazela sam, amathunz’ anabile nam ndixakiwe kuba ndikhonkxiwe.
The suffocation is to my death, as frustration builds up so quickly to my end and I want to give in
Xesha lixhatashwe yinja andisasazi nesizathu kodwa ndifuna ukuphila.
Barbed wires crossing my naked body from the tip of my toe to that of my black hair, the iron prickles entering my flesh as if so divinely, yet I bleed the little life I have within.
Ndinxanelwe ixesha lam, umzuzu nomzuzu lisela lobomi bam, amathunz’ anabile, xesha lixhatshwe yinja nto zakowethu, ndinxanelwe ixesha lam.

My eyes glisten not to excitement but to the hope being sapped out of me as the sun hides behind the mountains and the owls come out and play.
I cast them down from the images of my peers on mountain tops waving goodbye in excitement.
I stretch my arms in fury, trying to break free and the depth of my scars as I spread my arms is unspeakable.
The wells of my blood remind me, there is yet life within and at the rise of another day, then that is my reason to live again.

To these thoughts I cast my eyes to the ground, ndicengacengane nesazela sam, ndithuthuzelane nomphefumlo wam, ndithunga-thunge umnatha wethemba lam, lidlavu kaloku uxolo andisenalo.
To this realisation I let my body lose and release the tension, accepting my current state, however not giving up.
Ubomi ngumzamo, from the rise of the sun till the going of the same, promises made aren’t told of when they will manifest.
So I say Kosenyangweni umenzi nomgqibelelisi walomntu undim.
Kholo lwam lukwe, Themba lam nguwe, Ntando ndini yakho mayenzeke, lomntu undim kuwe uyakhothama, wode ufezekise izithembiso zakho, AMEN.
