Being In Love

Being in love
is like blood in your mouth,
it is a stray, crippled phoenix
once proud, burning in
the heart, as a room with
just a fire, smothering
the occupant in ashes of
wolf-hide grey smoke,
starving the lungs of oxygen
like the first time
gas was used in trench
warfare, straight into
the snaring embrace of
bullets & bayonet lunges,
because i’m my own worst enemy
when it comes to falling
in love.
