The Soldier That Survived

The soldier that survived.

You, the one that made it through hell,
Fighting in trenches, in your young life,
You are one of the few that could tell;
The horrific story…..how did you survive? !

You, the one that lost so many, you call a friend,
To a war that never seemed to come to an end.

You, the one that had to kill, to survive,
Otherwise you would not stay alive.

You, the one that lost a limb or eyesight,
You felt, that life never can be as bright.

You, the one that had shell shock to recover from,
You felt, like you would rather have died from that bomb.

You, one soldier that did make it to the end,
With traumatized mind and body, you had to continue your life,
But these injuries were impossible to mend,
Horrific memories constantly cutting like a knife.

You, the soldier that survived,
Hundred years later, you are not amongst us anymore.
I commemorate you, in my peaceful life.
Fortunate to live in a country without war.
