valerie Hartland Poems

If invited to read a poem be sure
Read, read, read again
Take in each line before reading more
and before you comment, have your say
...

You're not that little girl I cared for anymore
not the child who didn't speak my language and didn't understand
grown and changed you call the law against me when I fail you
and miss the boundary line
...

Some say I have changed
that I seem to understand
so much more than I did before
I don't think so
...

Why is it that writing verse
Comes at such a price a cost?
For years we sit in the classrooms gloom
While over us the teachers loom
...

You dumped me so very legally
firmly closed the door
sent an email
so formally

You Didn'T Understand Me

If invited to read a poem be sure
Read, read, read again
Take in each line before reading more
and before you comment, have your say
before you claim to understand
perhaps say too lightly 'your poem is nice'
Not understanding can have a price
Read, read, read again....

Be sure you see between the lines
the words of joy or pain
Read, read, read again take care,
its hard to understand another's times
unless you have been there
Verse the hearts verbal expression, gives it voice
To glance or look deeper you have the choice
Read, read, read again

Read, read, read again
or perhaps beware the reaper
bringing pain the price to pay
because you didn't take the time
missed the meaning in a line
read, read, read again
or risk paying the price, because you didn't understand
what is written in the poets hand
is what's in the poets heart when given voice
so..read, read. read again....
