Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
...
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
...
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
...
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
...
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
...
The most important thing we've learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set -
...
The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
...
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
...
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

Writing a poem is not about bringing some words together to create some charming sentences. It's so much deeper than that. Writing poetry is a bridge that allows people to express their feelings and make others live every single word they read. Poetry is to educate people, to lead them away from hate to love, from violence to mercy and pity. Writing poetry is to help this community better understand life and live it more passionately. PoemHunter.com contains an enormous number of famous poems from all over the world, by both classical and modern poets. You can read as many as you want, and also submit your own poems to share your writings with all our poets, members, and visitors.
The joy of man, the pride of brutes,
Domestic subject for disputes,
Of plenty thou the emblem fair,
Adorn'd by nymphs with all their care!
I saw thee raised to high renown,
Supporting half the British crown;
And often have I seen thee grace
The chaste Diana's infant face;
And whensoe'er you please to shine,
Less useful is her light than thine:
Thy numerous fingers know their way,
And oft in Celia's tresses play.
To place thee in another view,
I'll show the world strange things and true;
What lords and dames of high degree
May justly claim their birth from thee!
The soul of man with spleen you vex;
Of spleen you cure the female sex.
Thee for a gift the courtier sends
With pleasure to his special friends:
He gives, and with a generous pride,
Contrives all means the gift to hide:
Nor oft can the receiver know,
Whether he has the gift or no.
On airy wings you take your flight,
And fly unseen both day and night;
Conceal your form with various tricks;
And few know how or where you fix:
Yet some, who ne'er bestow'd thee, boast
That they to others give thee most.

The snail moves like a
Hovercraft, held up by a
Rubber cushion of itself,
Sharing its secret
With the hedgehog. The hedgehog
Shares its secret with no one.
We say, Hedgehog, come out
Of yourself and we will love you.

Last stand for her upon the thymele,
A stage denied its sacrificial torch.
Tragedian's voice tears the air apart;
A mournful mask bows low before the choir
And naked truth is chanted as a rite—
In garments dyed to counterfeit the fair.
Disastrous turns in Dionysus' house,
Far past the reach of pity or of stay.
...
Intense, I retreat into sweet melancholic distractions,
alchemising poems out of heartache.
Impulsive as a brook turned inwardly volatile,
I cling as moss does to a smooth stone.

When I see the green and red
Of the furnace flames aglow,
And a white dove is rising in the skies.
And those sleek, slender, starving black-

I could make all your meals
and sort you out a hearty beef broth
I could do all your laundry
and even learn to darn your damn socks

A child of twelve looks back quite dignified
moderately sad dragging her cloth-sack
across lands slanting upwards, , putrefied.
Skies above filled with scavenging crows glide

I question: is love an illusion
What am I feeling, singing like a bird in a tree
My heart is a crevasse
It needs filling every day
...
A little more light
What could it mean
What could it be
We all have our nemesis
...
I'm as tactile as you
But only softer to touch
No whiskers on my face
Or calluses on my hands.

When she charges her hybrid plug-in BMW,
standing there like a supermodel,
white ankle socks, a caramel knee-high dress,
tinted glasses, clutching

So many selfies I see,
women holding their phones out to the side—
so who on earth was the photographer,
when her own arm's still in the shot?

I dwell
In the absence
You left behind
...
If you die before me
I would jump down into your grave
and hug you so innocently
that angels will become jealous.

Beautiful is the 'thank you'
Wrapped with gratitude,
Offered to peace prone people
Who offer what is real-themselves

Indoors by technology, outdoors by speedy transport
I travel the world
Today in Japan, tomorrow in Rome,
Next day by an ancient civilization or in Hawaii or Coast Ivory,

The low lands call
I am tempted to answer
They are offering me a free dwelling
Without having to conquer

Love and lust are poles apart.
Lust is chaos, love is art.

And the first from her heels to her dainty head
Was charming in every sense of the word:

The weary task is put away,
And I can sing and I can smile,
Alike, while I have holiday.
