Ain't ya just proud?

  It is amusing – in an ironic way –
when I hear Humanity refer to itself as civilised;
In a world where Cocaine sniffing, alcohol swilling pop stars
are idolised
and law-abiding citizens are terrorized
by kids in hoods who rule the streets,
and society rewards their misdemeanours
with holidays and treats,
the scientific community creates life-saving potions
and others are content to decimate the oceans
so that you may have a fishy with your fries,
or hunt the whale to extinction
so you can put make-up on your eyes…

Civilized…
Like prison governors and warders are civilized
when they turn a blind eye
When a prisoner gets beaten and brutalised
Humanity!
Ain’t ya just proud?

When we are all so civilized,
it no longer matters if some members of our society are
ostracised…
minimalised…
marginalised...
Tuck away the challenged
where we can no longer see them;
Give them certain human rights
but make sure they won’t use them…

Ignore the homeless and the needy;
Let them freeze to death in their gutters overnight
But ensure the mass murderer has got a telly in his room…
We don’t want to trample on his human rights…
do we?
Humanity!
Ain’t ya just proud?

Strong anddark this powerful outburst of prose Kev. Masterfully worded too and the title catches the eye. First rate. My first reading of your work but assuredly it will be not be the last. Shall visit your page again real soon. A 10 for this one, from Fay.
