As He Was

I only remember him
As he was - -
Young, vibrant, and
Dressed in his Uniform,

My Navy Guy, handsome
And Brown Haired, smiling
That charming smile, and
Winking - - at ME!

I only remember him
As he was - -
Not the crumpled form
Lost in his wheelchair,

Unable to stand,
Or to speak to me,
To smile at me,
Or wink those baby blue eyes.

I only remember him
As he was - -
And maybe, just maybe,
It is better that way.

This is a beautiful poem so tender and touching. So very human and so humane. As he was is he...he'll always be. The love remains the same and is all the greater for being so. Truly a love poem...that eclipses time with a wink. Very very beautiful!
