Carol - Poem by Paola Degli Esposti

I feel numb next to her. Carol. we are walking side by side, the dog barking and jumping and running through the fields, he is driving Carol crazy. I am talking to her about my life in the country, my studies, my aspirations and she listens to me in silence.
She is different from Candy, she looks at me as i am an handsome boy. I am not.
I touch my hairs, i must be a hedgehog, Gus calls me in this way, in the morning.
The last person i want to meet now, it's just him.
In fact i ve changed our usual path, i am doing an alternative one.
' I think you are right, it must be amazing to live here and you can do a lot for your
country, your choice to become a doctor is admirable.
Carol tells me this and runs away following his dog that he is moving too far from us.
When she is back i make her ' the question i had in mind since i saw her for the first time.
' Where do you come from? '
' i am from here, why? '
' Just a curiosity, you look like you come from another country.'
' No, i am from here.'
' Why have you gone away from home Carol?
' I needed to breathe, i know it is not the best, the best it could have been to
take a room in an hotel or in a ranch, but who had the time to think about it!
I smile to her. I don't want to think anything in this moment.
Now i do not know what to say, i am amazed and terrified at the same time.
And we are arrived in front of my house.
We pass the gate and Carol looks around and comments: ' Congrats, amazing
farm! ''
' Thank you! ' i tell her and i see my mother outside the door, she is feeding our
As soon as she sees me, she runs towards me and embraces me.
' Where have you been, I thought you were with Gus, he has looked for
you this early morning.'
For a fraction of time i feel my bloody pressure rising up, ' what the hell Gus
wants in the early morning!
Mum, i ve gone away from them at a certain point, this is Carol, my friend,
i ve met her in the ' Garden '.
My mother greets her and tells her sweetly: You are welcome Carol, please
let me offer you a cup of coffee or tea, what you prefer. Let's go inside home!
' Thank you, Missr Missr? Carol wants to know my mother's name.
' Aura, i am Aura.'
And we follow her inside home, i take a breathe, my father is not at home yet.
