empty bellies

you can’t be happy
on an empty stomach
you can be covetous
justifiably angry
forlornly hungry
resentfully criminal
you could even plan to blow something up

it doesn’t matter
that that someone
may be hungry too
that that someone
may be covetous justly angry forlornly hungry resentfully criminal

the thing about blowing something up:
it does not discriminate
it does not favor full bellies
over empty ones
the fact that more people are not blown up
reveals the natural compliance of most humans
particularly those
who write about empty bellies
when theirs is so terribly full

poet Alfred Edward Housman

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
