Joshua Cutts

(12/1/1982 / Wallingford)

I Am a Warlord

I have built fires, set them to days
on an ocean, collecting the steam
as it boils the surface, the skin of the worthless
the parasites living off the blood of the homeless
the restless, all tired, all seeking a city
whose stones have been laid by a god

direction, I call this direction
the longing for elsewhere, the call of a faraway bride
suspicion, an aching suspicion
I won't recognize it until a part of me has died

I am a warlord, with bloodthirst
and sadistic campaigns, warring against
the sting of my past sin, a nagging stealth fighter
elusive and daring, and violently uncaring
although it is banished, no memory's vanished
a civil war thorn in my side

let me be candid, I feel I've been stranded
on an island with no bread and wine
Am I stuck here on purpose?
Who could deserve this?
The infinite silence and lies...

Poem of the Day

poet John Clare

I love to see the old heath's withered brake
Mingle its crimpled leaves with furze and ling,
While the old heron from the lonely lake
Starts slow and flaps its melancholy wing,
