I think the first character is deliberately ambiguous. If you look at most manual typewriters, there is no 1 key because you simply used the lowercase L. the effect is to split up the word loneliness thus:
1
one
1
iness
– thereby underscoring the solitude of the falling leaf.

this is my favourite poem.whenever i read it i feels the death and loneliness of human beings and line spacing make the picture of a fallen leaf.when i first read it i remember O'Henry's The last leaf.

'is this poem 1(a or l(a? ive seen both...'
It's a lower case 'L.' Try writing it out without line breaks, and remove the parenthetical clause, and you'll see...

This is my favorite cummings poem and one of my all time favorites overall. I love the simplicity of it and I love how you can almost see the leaf falling in the formation of the words, with the leaf lying down to rest in 'iness'. Beautiful.
