I've always loved syntaxis experiments. I think the poem talks about how people cannot always be in the position of judging someone else's actions. The mouse (who eats what's forbidden, the goods of family or do wrong by transmitting deseases) reminds the man that he can also do harm and therefore should't judge, for he may do harm and be set a trap, too, when being judge by other men.

I agree with Steven Wright..there is nothing complicated about this poem, once you lock on to the Yoda type sentence construction.

It is talking about a mouse and trying to survive, but it is also saying we should value life. it says that we are all just trying to get by.

A poisoned mouse still alive,
who does quietly stare up at me
out of the floor, is asking
What have I done that you
wouldn't have?

I really love this poem, I think Cummings in saying that why is a mouse's life worth less then that of a human, the mouse is asking what would he have done differently in the same situation, the mouse is doing what it can, and doesnt know any better.

I think cummings was responding to major computer meltdown. While compiling a volume, he must've clicked on Spellcheck v.neg50.x Beta. It mangled his work, he mangled the computer. This wonderful poem is the result of his after-thoughts.
  Jesse Trovillion  (7/14/2007 10:15:00 AM)

it doesn't matter whether or not he's the one who poisoned the mouse, it's about both creatures' lots in life. the mouse has done no wrong, nor has he, yet the mouse dies for it, simply because man sees himself as superior to mouse, even though that isn't really the case.
additionally, it has just occurred to me that this poem is so beautiful and succinct that any comment on it only detracts from it, so i apologize for writing this
