Ring the changes

Ring, ring the changes
All, all to no avail!
Grasp all the chances,
Oft ring the changes,
All to no avail!

Sing, sing the king's praises
All to no avail!
Only uproar it raises,
The dull grey sky gazes
All to no avail!

Leave politics now!
All to no avail!
Play football now
if you really know how,
All to no avail!

Join the boxing squad
All to no avail!
Do I end up awkward?
Do I remain a coward?
Okay then I'll sail!

Sail, sail in the sea, I sail
All to no avail!
I carry goods and mail,
I cook and bake and sell
All to no avail!

Okay then, join the journalists
All to no avail!
Reason with analysts,
Rub shoulders with finalists,
All to no avail!

Run to the Lottery
All to no avail!
Do your artistic pottery
Alongside the promising Lottery
All to no avail!

Internet activist or cultural activist?
All to no avail!
A.I.D.S activist or Political activist?
Human rights activist or Religious activist?
All to no avail!

All these years I sowed and gathered nil,
What did I take away?
Oh! Now I'm seriously ill,
Let me write my short will
Before eternally I waste away!

Poem of the Day

poet Alfred Edward Housman

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.
