Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
...
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
...
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
...
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
...
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;

The most important thing we've learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set -

Writing a poem is not about bringing some words together to create some charming sentences. It's so much deeper than that. Writing poetry is a bridge that allows people to express their feelings and make others live every single word they read. Poetry is to educate people, to lead them away from hate to love, from violence to mercy and pity. Writing poetry is to help this community better understand life and live it more passionately. PoemHunter.com contains an enormous number of famous poems from all over the world, by both classical and modern poets. You can read as many as you want, and also submit your own poems to share your writings with all our poets, members, and visitors.
FROM off a hill whose concave womb reworded
A plaintful story from a sistering vale,
My spirits to attend this double voice accorded,
And down I laid to list the sad-tuned tale;
Ere long espied a fickle maid full pale,
Tearing of papers, breaking rings a-twain,
Storming her world with sorrow's wind and rain.
Upon her head a platted hive of straw,
Which fortified her visage from the sun,
Whereon the thought might think sometime it saw
The carcass of beauty spent and done:
Time had not scythed all that youth begun,
Nor youth all quit; but, spite of heaven's fell rage,
Some beauty peep'd through lattice of sear'd age.
Oft did she heave her napkin to her eyne,
Which on it had conceited characters,
Laundering the silken figures in the brine
That season'd woe had pelleted in tears,
And often reading what contents it bears;
As often shrieking undistinguish'd woe,
In clamours of all size, both high and low.
Sometimes her levell'd eyes their carriage ride,
As they did battery to the spheres intend;
Sometime diverted their poor balls are tied
To the orbed earth; sometimes they do extend
Their view right on; anon their gazes lend
To every place at once, and, nowhere fix'd,

Autunm eats its leaf out of my hand: we are friends.
From the nuts we shell time and we teach it to walk:
then time returns to the shell.
In the mirror it's Sunday,
in dream there is room for sleeping,
our mouths speak the truth.
My eye moves down to the sex of my loved one:
we look at each other,

It's a modern blunder,
but that's why i wonder.
My thoughts are roaming,
and roving to someone's ear
and that brings fear.
They call it schizophrenia,
but i call it a woe, a weight -
on my chest, a pain inside my brain.
No matter how hard i resist,
...
Not too long ago
my mother used to live
in this room,
it was our habit

No joy is there like serving those in need,
Or really, serving anyone at any time indeed.
What gladness does fill the soul,
That chases away all sadness and weariness dull.

..but time has no anchor
it must move on
just as the sun today
as it yesterday shone
...
They are falling on me
the waves of life
so relentlessly
I'm swimming to survive
...
I cry in silence so pain won't hear,
but sorrow always lingers near.
A broken echo in empty air,
where even sadness forgets to care.
...
Death does not scream, it knows my name,
it walks in silence, never the same.
Not here to steal, but to remind,
that all we are will soon unwind.

A pin, a gleam, a tiny art,
Held words within its shining heart.
The cloth of flags, so bold and bright,
United states and royal might.

I love you like night loves a fading breath,
no promises of light, no fear of death.
You are the shadow that holds me near,
a silent salvation only darkness can hear.
...
You don't come like thunder, or like fire
you come like the morning light instead,
filling up the silence gently of everything
I have ever said.
...
You are a rose, made without trying.
soft pedals where worries fall,
a gentle kind of beauty, not to be proven at all
no hurrying flowering, no momentary gleam.
...
You're the silence in the loudest times,
The gentle light that never dies away.
As morning sun on troubled sea
you find a way to comfort me
...
The night I found you, I started wondering for once, am I happy?
I saw the light in the sky a month ago, when you walked in,
eyes that said, "please help me."
Lost, confused, like you knew where you were sitting
...
I dwell
In the absence
You left behind
...
If you die before me
I would jump down into your grave
and hug you so innocently
that angels will become jealous.

Beautiful is the 'thank you'
Wrapped with gratitude,
Offered to peace prone people
Who offer what is real-themselves

Indoors by technology, outdoors by speedy transport
I travel the world
Today in Japan, tomorrow in Rome,
Next day by an ancient civilization or in Hawaii or Coast Ivory,

The low lands call
I am tempted to answer
They are offering me a free dwelling
Without having to conquer

Love and lust are poles apart.
Lust is chaos, love is art.

"Come, pretty birds, present your lays,

Ye wood-nymphs, let your voices be

If you had the choice of two women to wed,

And the first from her heels to her dainty head
Was charming in every sense of the word:

A little while, a little while,
The weary task is put away,
And I can sing and I can smile,
Alike, while I have holiday.

Life's flushest feather -
