The Banished Sri Lankan Knight

The day the lions saw the defeat
The embarrassing cowardly retreat
The ice cubes cut their limbs, ripped their bones
Flintoff* crushing toes…
Harmisson* slitting throats…

The Stumps uprooted, the bails distorted
The Spines shattered, the hopes decimated
The humiliation
Of an Innings defeat

The opener
Retired hurt with a broken limb
Yet came as the number ten*
And fought till the end
With a broken bone in icy wind

The great warrior
Did they treated him as a valiant knight?

No
Later
My beloved minion
The ardent lion
Crucified as a mutant lyken
By murderous cricket cannibals

Once the king
Treated to a Vulcan
Once the Bat Man
Later the milk man

Yet,
In a final dual
Offered to the Kangaroo giants
The Sacrificial lamb fought with Lee*
Scored a eighty with his delicate tree willow

Kangaroos treated him with honey
Lee* came to pat his back belly
He thought it is ridiculously funny
Yet cannibals cut his limbs and made a lion jelly

He was cut, chopped to pieces
Then the salt, the pepper and chilies
Finally the insults, saliva and sorries
The cannibals ate deviled curries

Yet did he die?

Nor he still roars with golden mane
Like the Dark Knight, fighting evil Kanes

Is he the Hasselhoff the Michael Knight?
Th batman the Dark Knight?
Or Bradman* the great Knight?

Nor
He is my Idol
The immortal valiant
The Legendary Merlin
The Marvelous Marven
The banished Sri Lankan knight

Dedicated to the great Sri Lankan Cricket captain Marvan Attapattu.....
well i m very passionate about the game and even tears came to my eyes when i write those lines....and how the authorities treated him towards the latter part of his career....and he is not the only one to suffer like this either..many great servants have been banished with out necessary gratitude

Notes
*Flintoff- Popular English all rounder Andrew Flintoff
*Harmisson- Great English Pace bowler Steve Harmison
*Lee- Reference to Bret Lee one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket/ from Australia..
*Bradman-Reference to The greatest batsman to have ever played the game Sir Donald Bradman

Old is still gold in any language. The world needs
heroes. They only improve with age as they
become a legend in their own time. An
amazing metaphorical write. Praise
for your dramatic pen.

Kind wishes,

Sandra

As one for whom cricket is but a mystery, your poem shows me the passion of the devotee. I know folk from Sri Lanka and India 'live' their cricket (even more perhaps than those from Britain where the game originated or Australia, who will forever strive to defeat the Poms) and this poem certainly expresses the intensity of a devotion that has an almost religious significance. In this poem, your language is extravagant, your structure is abrasive, the intensity of your passion is palpable and your veneration for your hero knows no bounds. Another wonderful read full of surprises. Love, Allie ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Hi,

Well of course this title caught my eye... (you know why) .

Your poetry is so... artistic, I don't (of course) get any of the clues to understanding the message, put you sure paint with lovely colors.

Great writing here. Great imagery of a talented heart. I am not into the English? version of our American baseball. Flat bats and all. But I can see the well versed stanzas of a very poetic and artistic talent at hand, the power behind this master piece! God bless us all-MJG.

I am not into cricket, yet my husband tries to explain it all to me. What I am into is your fabulous imagination creating imagery with your own unique style. I can see you have dedicated this work towards this sportsman and those who know of him, are having a 'ball of a time' reading your work!

Yes; Shashen...Attapattu was a classic player...more of the test cricket class like Dravid, Kallis, Chanderpaul and Fleming...age was telling on his fielding alright, but as you said there was a couple of years good cricket left in him at the time he was sadly ignored...good tribute to the diplomatic soft spoken classic cricketer...thanks...10
