The Flawed Perfection of Humanity

I watch your feet and calves descend
devoured by the madness
I observe the ooze; it clutches, hungers
as you regard with only sadness

I see you sink down past your knees
and cast helpful hands away
one by one they leave you
abandoned to decay

your torso is enveloped now
still from your lips excuses spew
degrading is the allurement
once plastered over you

your friends, your peers and family
deterred by your fell actions
took with them all the golden strips
disguising less desirable fractions

swathed in dark up to your neck
still guilty you do not plead
you begin to blame the masses
as from your eyes, the tears do bleed

realization strikes you
as you continue to sink
no one now remains
to guide you from the brink

your chin is hidden under ooze
your face contorted with fear
to spite the cruelty you've inflicted
my course of action is clear

down I'll reach, and pull you out
though alone I cannot succeed
you must shoulder half the battle
you must take part in the deed

why should I aid they who would not
recognize the flaws in plain view?
She who lashed, he who shattered
I'm just the same as you

Poem of the Day

poet George Gordon Byron

So we'll go no more a-roving
So late into the night,
Though the heart still be as loving,
And the moon still be as bright.

For the sword outwears its sheath,
