Want And Need - Poem by Kelly Kurt

The central failing in the history of man
Has been his insatiable greed
Not caring enough about anybody else
To discern between want and need

It's great! That is the main problem, we always desire more than we need, whereas our real needs are limited....................10 (Report) Reply

Thank you my friend. I have found as I get older, that I require little and want even less

Greed I hope to give up one day, your poem and comments are steps in the right way. Want and need are sometimes difficult to distinguish I think. (Report) Reply

I am still (Unfortunately) human. I see things and think, That would be nice to have. But then I think, I have done without it so far, so I obviously don't need it. Many possessions own their owner. Many of the things I most enjoy, cannot be owned (Sunsets, cool breezes, happy thoughts) I do want global peace, an end to hunger and disease etc. And at times, I want to be without the pains that wrack my body, but I remember the old adage, Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it. Perhaps my arthritis and diabetes and other pains serve some purpose and motivate me in ways I don't understand.
Peace right back at you, Ayman!

I wish for you to thrive and not just survive Kelly. But you know yourself best my dear friend, so all the success and happiness to you with giving up your materialistic 'wants'. I think in some ways I may be similar to you as some days I don't like 'the wants' of the world. Yet other days I am greedy. I just hope I can live up to my own expectations and standards, and that which others expect of me, before I am dead. You are a real inspiration for me sir. Peace and happiness to you. Thank you

This has long been a pet project of mine. My needs are few and hierarchical. Oxygen, water, food and protection from the elements (Housing and clothing) EVERYTHING else is at best, a want and can be done without.

Without a doubt this is the underlying problem in regards what is wrong with this world. On every level from a personal to an international level. Greed is pervasive. (Report) Reply

In many forms. Greed for: Wealth, possessions, territory, power, fame. And the associated waste

Greed is one of the most powerful forces controlling human behavior. Its all in one's mind. If one is capable of taming one's own mind, that's where the peace lies. Full marks! (Report) Reply

Comfort is desirable but excess does no good unless shared. You can't take it with you.
