Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
...
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
...
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
...
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends

The most important thing we've learned,
So far as children are concerned,
Is never, NEVER, NEVER let
Them near your television set -

Writing a poem is not about bringing some words together to create some charming sentences. It's so much deeper than that. Writing poetry is a bridge that allows people to express their feelings and make others live every single word they read. Poetry is to educate people, to lead them away from hate to love, from violence to mercy and pity. Writing poetry is to help this community better understand life and live it more passionately. PoemHunter.com contains an enormous number of famous poems from all over the world, by both classical and modern poets. You can read as many as you want, and also submit your own poems to share your writings with all our poets, members, and visitors.
The buried voice bespake Antigone.
'O sister! couldst thou know, as thou wilt know,
The bliss above, the reverence below,
Enkindled by thy sacrifice for me;
Thou wouldst at once with holy ecstasy
Give thy warm limbs into the yearning earth.
Sleep, Sister! for Elysium's dawning birth, -
And faith will fill thee with what is to be!
Sleep, for the Gods are watching over thee!
Thy dream will steer thee to perform their will,
As silently their influence they instil.
O Sister! in the sweetness of thy prime,
Thy hand has plucked the bitter flower of death;
But this will dower thee with Elysian breath,
That fade into a never-fading clime.
Dear to the Gods are those that do like thee
A solemn duty! for the tyranny
Of kings is feeble to the soul that dares
Defy them to fulfil its sacred cares:
And weak against a mighty will are men.
O, Torch between two brothers! in whose gleam
Our slaughtered House doth shine as one again,
Tho' severed by the sword; now may thy dream
Kindle desire in thee for us, and thou,
Forgetting not thy lover and his vow,
Leaving no human memory forgot,
Shalt cross, not unattended, the dark stream
Which runs by thee in sleep and ripples not.
The large stars glitter thro' the anxious night,

In life
one is always
balancing
like we juggle our mothers
against our fathers
or one teacher
against another
(only to balance our grade average)

O solemn Night,
you were my first inheritance,
laid upon my shoulders
before I knew the weight of living.
In your cold chambers
I learned the language of silence,
the discipline of disappearing,
the art of surviving what could not be spoken.
You shaped the boy

Very often an auspicious land comes
In my profound imagination,
I stare at it
In absolute amazement,

A man once shone, in golden gleam,
A Muisca king, a waking dream.
With sticky sap and dust so bright,
He stood arrayed in shining light.

Well, money must be abundant in the Dail.
While the deprived of Ireland have none at all.
The man who is giving it away is called Micheál.
He is sending it to Ukraine for a weapons call.

What happens in that apartment?
A dimly lit one: how many people stay there?
What do they do?
What do they eat?

She kisses my bloody wrist
She wipes the tears from my eyes
She whispers It'll be fine, my love
Wait and see, I wont leave

If they dare persecute me, let it come,
And should you ever ask, I would tell:
I constructed a faith like Noah's Ark,
No flood nor storm could dare dispel.

Small rooms I enter.
I squat and read the scribbles.
Did fingers write these?

Coming home from the park,
Short trousers, and grazes on my knee,
I know I'm late, it's getting dark.
I wonder what's for tea?

We brought hearts.
They said 'get funding.'
We brought faith.

We do not build for the day.
We build for the decade.
We do not plant for ourselves.
We plant for those who will sit in our shade.

I dwell
In the absence
You left behind

If you die before me
I would jump down into your grave
and hug you so innocently
that angels will become jealous.

Beautiful is the 'thank you'
Wrapped with gratitude,
Offered to peace prone people
Who offer what is real-themselves

Indoors by technology, outdoors by speedy transport
I travel the world
Today in Japan, tomorrow in Rome,
Next day by an ancient civilization or in Hawaii or Coast Ivory,

The low lands call
I am tempted to answer
They are offering me a free dwelling
Without having to conquer

Once, entangled in the web of racist succubus;
Unruffled he declares before High Justice:
