Maria C. Pires Costa Poems

There is no wind blowing
The tree stands green, serene.
It enjoys the bird's singing
And wonders: 'What does it mean? '
...

From images of devastation,
deep pain, and sometimes even revolt,
come before our eyes living tokens
of humanitarianism, solidarity, cooperation -
...

They are friendly, entertaining, mysterious,
Addressing different themes, issues,
Telling us diverse life stories
Much more exciting than news.
...

Today I'm not in my usual mood
to face things in life as I would...
Sad thoughts of loss of our beloved,
and missing talks of other dearly loved
...

What glorious times she has lived!
Bright days of enthusiasm for her activity
Surrounded by lots of friends and a happy family!
Now treasuring plenty of gifts received...
...

From the top of the mountains
We breathed the pure air
Enjoying the stunning, awe-inspiring views,
That stretched around there.
...

From dawn till dusk
They are compliant
With every principle and task.
They are humble, obedient,
...

They say that my lines
convey serenity, peace, harmony.
But I wonder: does it inhabit in those thoughts
some fantasy? A little of bravery?
...

We've stared at their faces - desolate, devastated-
By flowing tears flooded.
Every image portrayed
Their lively dreams suddenly disappeared.
...

If you can see the sun shining,
And listen to birds cheerfully chirping,
Seize that harmony in Nature
For it can bring peace to every creature...
...

É ter e não ter
É alegria e dor
Em cada dia desde o amanhecer.
É lidar, actuar, recordar,
...

Crowds gather around Tahrir Square
Fighting for a change... fair.
From here we sense people's anxiety
Longing for a better future
...

Pergunto-me por que razão
isto acontece...?
O sono ainda não obedece
O coração quase estremece
...

I have no time
To waste any longer.
I just want to live
Each day in wonder.
...

The quietness and brightness of our days
Escaped from here, my dear.
It shouldn't have been that way -
For the memories, fondness, care
...

Many lovely stories have been told
So passionately, rich they are like gold.
Strong feelings, lively emotions have been preserved
So intensely, true they are so vivid!
...

It has caused much anxiety
Preventing us from working online
Blocking our interests without piety.
...

It surely was a hard time
For you to have to say 'goodbye'!
Did she really care about your plans,
Your talks, your efforts, your dreams?
...

Dizem que os meus versos
veiculam serenidade, paz, harmonia.
Mas interrogo-me: há nesse pensar
alguma fantasia? Um pouco de ousadia?
...

It is winter outside...
A cold atmosphere that most fear
For the scarce food, no warm clothes,
Even no home, no job, no health protection.
...

Maria C. Pires Costa Biography

I live with my husband and two sons in this quiet, sunny side of Europe, Portugal. Writing (very modestly) has been part of my personal interests, and it always provides me with much energy and motivation to face hard times. It also invites me to reflect on the surrounding world, and when it comes to poem writing that's so particular. We really enjoy sharing simple thoughts and feelings, especially when we think we might be helping others. Meanwhile, we have joined this large community to keep learning a lot from You! We do revere many acclaimed poets who will always be living and inspiring our days. John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Wordsworth, W.B.Yeats, Edgar A. Poe, William Blake, William Shakespeare, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Rumi, Rabindranath Tagore, and the contemporary Naomi Shihab Nye, Jackie Kay, Andrew Motion, amidst others.)

Sweet Harmony

There is no wind blowing
The tree stands green, serene.
It enjoys the bird's singing
And wonders: 'What does it mean? '

Blessed by this soft rain
Both the bird and the tree
Keep singing tunes again
Flooding the earth with glee!

The bird's chants soar above the tree
This one feels nurtured by them
Its leaves dancing onto the sea
Where the bird goes and treasures them!

I wonder how 11 Sept might have affected the poetess as I read down her work. I have a sense of grief and this tone continues and it only changes in reading the 'Rainbow Gathering'. There's tragedy on her work (natural and human upheavals) and sensitiveness showing the presence of human kind in every poem of her. But I still hold in my heart and mind the question on 'how the 11 September might have affected the poetess in her writing! ' Tanguene
