Morgan Lyons Poems

Ten years from now

I’ll look out
...

As the sun slowly set

On my days of youth,
...

On the night she killed Ryan,

She sat in front of the mirror,
...

Her thumb touched the space

Her wedding ring used to be
...

Ten Years From Now

Ten years from now

I’ll look out

From the porch of my house

And wonder where

The time went.

And as I wonder,

I’ll recall

The things I saw

And the things I did

That made me

Who I was

Because what’s life

Without a little bit of

Reflection.

Ten years from now,

I’ll stop burying

The skeletons in my closet

Because Lord knows

If you keep burying the dead

You’ll just get a bigger

Sinkhole

That will eventually

Swallow you with it.

I’ll stop running

From my past

And at last

Accept the fact

That the parts of me

I gave to others who left,

I’m never going to get back.

That even though I trip

Someone’s going

To pick me up

And bandage my hurt,

Because while sticks and stones

May break my bones,

It’s the lack of words that

Hurts worst.

Ten years from now

I’ll be a mother.

I’ll teach my kids that

Love is patient,

Love is kind,

It does not judge

So they shouldn’t either.

They won’t know

The pain

Of a broken home

Because even if we are broken

We’ll have enough pieces

Between us

To piece us back together.

Ten years from now

I’ll think about progress.

About how the hate stopped

And the love began.

I’ll think about the girl

Who had to hide

Her sexuality

From her friends

And her parents.

Because she was an

Abomination

Rather than beauty

But now she’s

Free

To hold hands with

Her lover

As they walk

Down the street.

And “gay” would stop

Being an insult

And would just be apart

Of reality.

Ten years from now

The world will become

Colorblind

And the whites fade to blacks

And the blacks fade to whites

Because we didn’t

Fight so hard

For the right

Of equality

To have it squandered away

By a hating ideology.

Ten years from now

I won’t be so afraid

Of all the choices

And mistakes

In the past

That I’ve made.

I’ll accept them

And realize

They’ve made me

Who I am today.

And maybe that way

I’ll be able to accept

Myself.

Ten years from now

No one will be afraid

Of the dark

Because we will

Realize

That the monsters

Only have as much power

As we give them.

And we will give them

Nothing.

Ten years from now

Ignorance will dissipate

And in its wake

Will sprout knowledge.

Ten years from now

We’ll put down the guns.

Ten years from now

We’ll know the beauty

The everyone is

Born with.

Ten years from now

We’ll stop taking

Pictures

And instead

Take out mirrors

To reflect

On our mistakes.

Ten years from now,

It’ll be a new day.

Ten years from now

I’ll look out

From the porch of my house

And wonder where

The time went.

And as I wonder,

I’ll recall

The things I saw

And the things I did

That made me

Who I was

Because what’s life

Without a little bit of

Reflection.
