025: Marilyn Poem by Colin Johnston

025: Marilyn

To write about “The Regal”, I was asked
I thought it quite a major task
But, this one here is not like that
It came to me, just like that

I met my ‘Mother’ there you see
Though she is Scots, she’s not like me
I am Irish born and bred.
Now, if you think that’s something silly said
I’ll tell you this true tale instead

It was in 1968
To Dunfermline, Fife, I did migrate
To be in The Navy and see the Sea
Was all that mattered then to me

Into The Regal for a quick drink
Before the film starts, we think
‘Mother’, Anna and Mrs Smith
Marion and Veronica
Our Scottish Friends, to see.
Me from Ireland, Him from Cornwall
We were Best Pals, I do recall

On that Special summers night
The Future to us all was bright
No sense of change then did we see
We were all so full of 'glee'

What do you want ‘Son’ she did ask
A pint of Special ‘Mother’ please,
And can I have that mug up there?
Was the reply that came from me

For Forty Years now, it’s been like that
And nothing much has changed
Some have gone and some remain
But she’s still my ‘Mother’,
And I’m still her ‘Son’

In everything but Name…

For Marilyn.....
A poem about a very dear friend
who has always looked after me...
and I still have 'that mug'...
