#292 Brand New Poem by Jimmie Arrington

I step outside into the dark,
Adjusting the gun on my hip.
I grab an umbrella before I embark
In case the sky might drip.

I walk along the same dirt road
I’ve walked many times before.
It’s here I let my mind unload
And let my imagination soar.

I stroll beneath the harvest moon
Encircled in a cloudy haze.
It’s here I hear the pleasant tune
That’s been in my head for days.

I raise up my umbrella high
To block the sudden rain.
It trickles from the flashing sky
Like a vertical traffic lane.

I pass the concrete bench that’s set
In an abrupt little clearing.
It’s here I see your silhouette
Before it starts disappearing.

I carry on but stop near the lake
To watch the drizzle dance.
It’s here I give a double take,
I saw your reflection at first glance.

Ahead I spot a low lit church
Where leaves fall in the distance.
It’s here my eyes begin to search
For your next reappearance.

I jump the fence around the freeway
And climb up the gravel hill.
It’s here I put my umbrella away
And let the light rain freely spill.

Drenched I look into the dark skies
And my head replays that lovely croon.
Then out of the blue I realize
Your voice is that pleasant tune.

With a smile on my face, I start home feeling brand new
And though I walked alone tonight, I always walk with you.
