A Battle To Win Poem by Bening Parwitasukci

A Battle To Win

Age,
we are strong women united by a strange fate.
If this is an open competition for you, you know who wins.
He is simply a man and you a woman,
who wins?

He has broken my heart, soul and life so badly,
you helped me glue the pieces back patiently,
he is the father of my son and you are the mother of my heart,
he is given the second chance and you’ve won the heart,
he is struggling to find the way home when you are home,
already,
he is simply a man and you a woman,
who wins?

If this is an open competition,
is it simply that because he is a man so he wins?
If it is, then,
don’t you think he would have won so long ago?
What about the time spent in that dark corner,
having you caress the pain, lick the wounds,
having you pump the spirit to the dead soul?
If it’s harder for you to win
it’s simply because you are a woman.

If this is an open competition,
I want you to fight for the love you promise me,
I am applauding for your efforts,
your courage, determination and love,
hoping you come out as the winner.
Yet, you’ll still have to go on fighting,
to teach me about this new kind of love,
cause I am naïve in this new facet of life.
How do I know what I am meant for you if I don’t understand?

Age,
I am applauding all the way,
Hoping you come out as the winner.
Fight for your love,
fight for me,
fight for us,
fight harder,
I am applauding all the way,
to meet you home.

Meanwhile,
I need to do my homework,
cleaning all the mess of the old shattered love,
left behind unattended for so long,
while applauding you all the way home.

Age,
you will need to teach me to say
welcome home.
