A Boxer Stands Poem by Randy McClave

A Boxer Stands

A boxer stands in the ring all alone
For his skills only he will atone,
In the ring he has no teammates to his left or right
In the battle he alone will fight.
There is no one with him to block the punches
And no one with him to shout out hunches,
And when he trains in the gym
There is only him.
He constantly plays chess in his mind
While players in other sports are controlled and blind,
They do what they are always told
While the boxer waits for the battle to unfold.
If a boxer loses a fight he alone will be blamed
But, for the loss he will not ever be ashamed,
He will never be asked to share his throne
In the ring, the boxer always stands alone.
