A Cat Poem by David Smart

A Cat

If only I could be a cat!
I'd watch the fire from on the mat
And have a chair in which to lie
And think not of the "how" or "why".

I'd know the smell of early morn
And hear the birds awake at dawn
And stalk the mouse through swaying grass
Or lie and let the hours pass.

In winter, frost and snow unkind
Make all things leave their tracks behind.
The snow is cold and much too deep
To lie in and, perhaps, to sleep.

The winter winds can rant and rave.
I'm comfortable in my cave.
A regal, proud, upstanding cat,
Watching the fire from on the mat.
