Harmony Road in Durham, Ontario is just a road
A road as any other
Houses stacked on either side when in the town
Meadows and farms alongside out in the country
It was on this road, driving to join the 407 toll
Enjoying the autumnal blaze of reds and gold
When there it was, on the left
A field of Canadian Geese
Not a few - hundreds, thousands
Thousands gathering together
Each vying for its space
Pushing away the other
Away from their own tiny patch of grass
The field itself transformed from a deep lush green
Into a throbbing mass of silvery black brown
Was it their gathering place before flying South
South to warmer climes, away from the coming winter cold
But that extraordinary moment passed
In seconds the drive took us away from that special sight
Onto the 407 and to continue gazing at the autumn glory
Enriched with the memory of that fleeting scene
A scene of a whole field, a field of Canadian Geese
Written on the 407 in Durham towards Richmond Hill, Ontario - 13th October 2020.
