A Good Beginning Poem by RIC BASTASA

getting to know you is a good beginning
i may look for love like you do
look for it and we hope somehow to find
what love is
as a beginner after riding on that train of pain

sooner, as i know your name, and your sorrows,
i stop and look at my past summers too
the drought we once had,
when all the leaves of my trees
shed off,
and all i have are just my fingers
and my stares,

i sigh,
and from there i look for an end
to all these
an exit, where no one feels anything again
someone must keep all the love
and make it grow
and have all the fruits and flowers

it is not me. I am numb.

i am looking for another opening,
where i can have another
good beginning and then finally find a happy ending.
