A Love Letter Poem by Suchi Banerjee

A Love Letter

Rating: 5.0

Mother says I'm grown up;
Grown up I must be
Because these days my mind misbehaves,
Misbehaves in ways a little girl cannot see.

Is it normal for this human heart
To beat like a humming bird's?
But palpitate, I palpitate
In response to all your spoken words.

Aren't you just like the rest of us?
A person of flesh and blood, just made out of dust?
Then why do I need more oxygen?
Why does my body feel like it's ready to combust?

Why don't you notice me?
Notice me, please notice me.
You are nice to those pretty girls...
Don't be so unkind to me.

Kashish, what would I not give to have her legs?
Spidery long and gorgeous, they don't let me rest.
She might sing nicely to your Spanish guitar
But I sing too, better better by far.

Oh, I am losing it, completely losing it,
It's all your fault, my pain, my anguish.
Why why why? Who asked you to smile at me?
Look at me now, out of control completely.

No, you aren't made out of dust after all.
It is magic dust, glittering gold like the dawn
Fish! it's official!
Any sense from my words is totally gone.

But hey wizard, you make my world brighter and better,
You've cast a lovely spell.
Trust me trust me I am not being silly.
I swear I sometimes feel empty where my heart should dwell.

You're reading this and probably wondering,
What got into this girl?
You are absolutely correct because,
My belly butterflies are making my head swirl.
But hey wizard, don't you worry
No pressures I swear
Impose my presence on you?
No no, I wouldn't dare.

But wizard I had to tell you
I have to take a chance.
I don't know where this will go
But you're messing with my head, I had to take a stance.

I promise I won't regret this
Because no matter what you say,
I will not spend a lifetime
Splitting my hair- ends on what ifs.

Don't freak out, oh don't freak out.
Take a chill pill I say,
Because no matter what you do,
That morning, you had brightened my day.

Well miss Suchi, this is definitely an improvement on you previous poems! :) this poem displays a greater control and mastery of words and emotions, and ooh I can simply taste the pain when she says She might sing nicely to your Spanish guitar But I sing too, better better by far. The conflict between the need to express her anguish and yet not to come off as needy and desperate is strong and beautifully dealt with. Overall, a successful attempt at the dramatic monologue form! Keep it up girl! ; 3
